Pained man who needs to see his Joplin emergency dentist

Are you experiencing new or unusual aches and pains in your teeth? Unfortunately, there is a long list of issues that could cause discomfort in your mouth, including tooth decay, poor brushing habits, chewing on hard objects, and many more. However, sometimes a toothache can be a warning sign of a much more serious problem that needs to be treated right away. Do you know how to tell if that pain in the back of your mouth is a dental emergency? Here are ten signs that you need to see your Joplin emergency dentist right away.

1.) A Loose Permanent Tooth

Fully developed teeth should never feel loose. However, the connective tissues that hold your teeth in place may become damaged or destroyed by an injury or infection.

2.) Severe Toothache

Minor toothaches can often be treated at home. However, toothaches that are intense, long-lasting, or sensitive to temperatures could mean that something is seriously wrong.

3.) Bleeding and Aching Gums

Gums that are aching, swollen, and bleeding are often the first warning signs of gum disease. If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and an increased risk of heart disease.

4.) Swollen Jaw or Face

If your swollen jaw or face is accompanied by a fever, bad taste in your mouth, or difficulty swallowing, you may have a serious oral infection that needs immediate attention.

5.) A Small, Pimple-Like Bump on the Gums

A small bump on your gums combined with a painful, discolored, or damaged tooth could mean that you have a tooth abscess. This infection can spread to other teeth if left untreated.

6.) A Canker Sore That Won’t Heal

Canker sores are a common, non-emergency issue that typically clear up on their own. However, if it lingers for longer than two weeks, it could be infected.

7.) Constant Headaches

Your teeth and jawbone are connected to the rest of your head, so if you grind your teeth while you sleep or have TMJ disorder, you may suffer from constant headaches.

8.) Numb Tooth

A bad toothache that suddenly disappears could mean that it’s gotten worse, not better. The infection might have reached the root or nerve of your tooth.

9.) Fatigue

Feeling tired is a difficult symptom to diagnose. Your body often gets fatigued as it fights off an infection, which could be in your mouth in the form of gum disease or a tooth abscess.

10.) Your Mouth Tastes Like Metal

A metal filling that becomes cracked or loose may cause the taste of metal in your mouth. Since this exposes the vulnerable tooth underneath, it needs to be treated right away.

If you’re still unsure if you are experiencing a dental emergency, give your dentist a call. They can help you determine if you need urgent care or provide step-by-step first aid guidance over the phone.
